Week 4: Assessing, Reflecting, Planning

Today I had an art class with the 8 years old twins. At the beginning of our class, I let them did VTS for 15 minutes. Since they had done the Pre-VTS last time, they were very glad to discuss the image leading by me. When watching the picture for a little while, I asked, “What’s going on in this picture?” One answered, “There’re a mother and her kids.” Then they distinguished that one was big sister, the other was younger. They noticed the trees behind them, and inferred it might be summer, and it happened in a forest. The big brother of the twins even found they were taken photos, because their faces were facing the same direction. It was a big discovery and I was impressed. Then little brother noticed the small details in people’s clothes, and the flowers in the mother’s hand. He connected these details to the taking photo thing(which found by the other kid), he thought the people dressed up and holding a bunch of flowers maybe because they were taken photos. And he even inferred that maybe that day was an important day, they might celebrate something. I think it is really good to connect others ideas together and find new things. The interactions help they make the meaning. I think they learnt to how to discuss as a group in this way. And they learnt to how to infer the information from the observation and connect the related information together. For example,  one found the woman was holding a bunch of flowers, and it seemed that the color of the flowers were the same as the flowers behind them in the forest, so he thought maybe they got the flowers from the forest. It was a nice experience to do VTS with them, and I just expressed thankful for participating the discussion as the conclusion.

Maybe because I am familiar with them, it makes me relax and natural when leading them to do VTS. But sometimes I changed the questions, such as I asked “Why do you think so?” instead of “What can you see makes you say that?” I think it occurred maybe for the reason that I was not familiar with this question enough, and what I thought about was just “Why do you think so?”, I haven’t made the image related to the questions very well. It surprised me that the kid found the people were taken photo in just about 5 minutes, so I couldn’t help saying “Great”. I should keep neutral next time and I think I will do better.

I plan to continue using the image on VTS website, and I will try to correct the things mentioned above. And I should improve my language in order to paraphrase better.
